Setting goals for Combel in 2021 starts with an African proverb:
Lots of little people, doing little things, can change the world.
“Our duty to our children is to live in a more sustainable world and this is becoming increasingly essential.
Our publishing house is keen to take up the gauntlet of integrating education for sustainability, because we are convinced that education can bring about change and help us build the better world we all long for. This is a world that imbues us with the values of a new eco-cultural civilisation, avoiding simple and hasty solutions.
It is urgent that we explore new ways of living and of building a new ecological culture; to do this, we adults must become aware that we have to set aside certain habits that we have acquired and learn others from our children.
At Combel we are setting out on this path with the book 12 Things to Do Before You Grow Up, by Teresa Franquesa and illustrated by Olga Capdevila, which encourages children to connect with nature and enjoy it with all their senses, spending less time in front of screens and digital devices. The love for nature and a desire to conserve it will emerge from this experience, emotion and knowledge. And the lucky child who has had the opportunity to experience an emotional bond with the natural world will be the young person committed to the natural and human environment.
On the other hand, fiction books can also foster respect for the environment, while allowing them to enjoy their first experience of reading. The recently released Bitmax & Co series from the dynamic duo Copons & Fortuny is a good example. This is a new collection of graphic novels for younger children starring a little robot and a whole host of characters who live in the Blue Forest, an idyllic natural environment where they co-exist in respect, harmony and companionship.
Finally, in line with this desire to educate based on the principle that human beings are nature, with which we form a whole, we pay great attention to the editing and production processes we use for our materials. We will have to adapt and this is a path that we have just started to follow, but we consider it essential to help us become aware of our own ecological footprint.
Because, as Edmund Burke said, “Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little”.
Committed to sustainability: words into action
After many months of hard work, we are very happy to announce that we have started producing PEFC certified books when printing in Spain. For our publications printed in China, we’ll be using FSC certified paper whenever possible.
